By Kenzie Woessner, Senior Editor-in Chief, The Talon Yearbook

On Thursday, November 13, 2014, Rockwall ISD School Board Vice-President Linda Duran visited the Student Leadership classes at Rockwall-Heath High School. Duran had previously visited one of the classes with Principal Tom Maglisceau. She and Leah Voth, RHHS Leadership Teacher, agreed that it would be a great opportunity for the students to have more time to gain insights and benefits from the words of wisdom that Duran planned to share with them.

“You take the lead because you see a need,” Duran said. She shared a story of her time as a high school counselor, when she led a weekly group of grieving students. One student, “Joseph,” communicated his desire to drop out of school. Duran’s response was to sit down and cry and beg him to reconsider. “I decided at that point that as long as I was a counselor, there would be a place for grieving students in my school.” Years later, she encountered this student, whom she no longer recognized. He had turned things around and was doing well with his life. “Mrs. Duran, don’t you recognize me? I’m Joseph.” He was pursing a degree in law enforcement.

“I never forgot that you cared enough to cry for me,” he told Duran. “There’s lots of different ways to change people—showing genuine and real caring and emotion made a difference. I’m lucky I ever found out later…how we affect people.”

“You step up when there’s a need—that’s leadership,” Duran said. “It’s amazing how one person can change a whole group for positive,” she continued. She asked students to write down their personal definitions of leadership and talked about the different types of leaders—authoritative, service, transformational/inspirational leaders.

She then asked students to write three qualities that they possess that make them good leaders. “I said selfless, proactive, and caring,” Senior Lauren Stilley said. “I said someone who is intelligent, perseveres, and is persuasive,” Senior Ryan McKay said. “Stepping up to do what’s right and not being afraid to make the decisions that are tough to make,” Senior Annabelle Baker said.

“It doesn’t matter if you have leadership qualities if you don’t ever get anyone to follow…to buy in to what you’re doing,” Duran cautioned the students. “It’s very easy to get led the wrong direction—people lead the wrong way all the time.”

She then asked students to write down the first leadership experiences they ever had, followed by what leadership experiences they want for their future. Several students communicated a desire to be a CEO, a nurse, a philanthropist. Duran responded by saying that those are all great goals and leadership opportunities and added, “There are many kinds of leadership. You don’t have to have a title to be a leader.”

Fifth Grade Students at Cullins Elementary Prepare for their Annual Colonial Night

Fifth grade students at Cullins Elementary are busy getting ready for their annual Colonial Night!  When the colonists first arrived to the Americas they did not have easy access to paper.  Paper was expensive to ship from England.  In order to make paper the colonists boiled rags and decomposed them down into a paper form.  Our students made their own recycled paper from scraps they had collected.  It gave them an insight into something we used on a daily basis!

5th Graders at Springer Elementary Study Circuits

What is a circuit and how does it shape the world we live in? Students in David Liechty’s 5th Grade science classes at Springer Elementary recently completed a week-long study on practical applications of circuits using mini circuit boards (called MakeyMakeys) that connect via USB to classroom computers.  Each day students worked in pairs to gain in-depth experience by covering topics such as conductivity, insulators, input and output, and series and parallel circuits.

The hands on investigations included experiments such as: “Can a banana complete a circuit?” in which students attached electrical wires to a banana to activate a drum machine, “The 21 person circuit challenge” in which a working circuit was completed when all students gave each other a simultaneous hi-five, and “Dance Dance Revolution Gamepad” in which students created a working dance pad that controlled the popular video game using only the conductive properties of pencil lead and notecards.

Additionally, the weeklong experience has sparked the imagination of a handful of students to want to grow deeper in their understanding of Science, Math, Technology and software coding.  As a result, an impromptu club has been set up for select students to learn the basics of software cause and effect with online programs. This has in turn inspired other students to be a part of this organic learning experience. The club has seen growth as others want to participate in something which creates an enjoyable tangible product such as a video game or animation. “I want to do this when I grow up, this is fun!” Caleb Rodriguez said of the exploratory project. Students will have opportunities to showcase their computer programs and interactive circuit demonstrations this year at the upcoming RISD Digital Media Fair.

Superintendent’s Update for November

As the holidays approach, I often reflect on the many things I’m thankful for, including the strong support and passion that our community has for Rockwall ISD schools, teachers and students.

Our community’s commitment to public education extends back to the mid-1880’s when a new railroad line was announced to come through Rockwall. Our forefathers knew the railway would bring more people to the area and built a new larger school to accommodate that growth. They understood that great schools anchor thriving communities – a sentiment still shared 130 years later.

Today, our community is again experiencing rapid growth with our Rockwall ISD student enrollment topping 15,000 for the first time in our history. Because of our tradition of academic excellence, our district is a destination district for families and teachers. In fact, we’ve added more than 300 additional students since last year.

To keep our schools among the best in Texas, I am working with our Board of Trustees on a long-range plan for addressing the growth in our student population and enhancing the educational opportunities we offer. We’ll continue to share more information with you as we prepare our district for the future.

One of the ways we enjoy sharing and listening is by welcoming community members to various programs we host.

We recently invited senior citizens in our community to join us for the inaugural meeting of the Silver Hawks and Silver Jacket Club and were overwhelmed by the positive response. I met many grandparents and alumni who are excited about the chance to be involved in our schools and continue our tradition of academic excellence. Our Silver Hawks and Silver Jackets will be invited to monthly meetings, bus tours of our campuses and receive free admission to athletic and fine arts events. If you or someone you know would like to be a part of the Silver Hawks and Silver Jackets Club visit our website for more information.

On December 9, we’ll host our final community ambassador meeting of the semester. This group of community members helps us spread the word about the many great things happening in Rockwall ISD. This program is open to anyone in our community who wants to help promote Rockwall ISD and public education. If you’re interested in joining our ambassador program just visit our website for additional information.

We’ve also been thrilled by the support of our community for our athletic teams in the playoffs. Both the Rockwall and Rockwall-Heath football teams will continue their playoff runs this weekend. Rockwall-Heath plays Wylie on Friday night at Plano ISD’s Clark Stadium at 7:30 p.m. Rockwall will have a rematch of their 2013 second round playoff game versus Dallas Jesuit on Saturday at Wylie ISD’s Stadium at 1 p.m. I hope you can come out to support our teams this weekend but if not you can always listen to the game live online at rockwallisd.com.

Our Fine Arts programs also has a full slate of holiday programs which you can see on our fine arts calendar on our website. I encourage you to include one of these performances in your holiday plans. Our students are amazing performers and passionate artists and you won’t be disappointed.

With the holidays comes the increased chance of winter weather. I want to share with you a new two-hour delayed start option that we’ll consider if inclement weather hits our area. We would use this option when a delay in starting school would enable our students and staff to arrive safely and then complete the school day. If we decide to use this option, we would communicate to you in the same way we would for a school closing. For more information on our two hour delayed start, please visit our website.

Thank you again for the support you’ve shown our students, teachers and district. Exemplary schools anchor great communities. They increase property values, lower crime rates, attract businesses and foster civic pride.

Our schools success is built on a foundation of community support and relationships. Together we are growing a district and community known for our Common Purpose and United Effort.

New Delay Start Option for Inclement Weather

Beginning this fall Rockwall ISD will add a new option for dealing with inclement weather, a two-hour delayed start. The two-hour delayed start will be used on days when weather conditions are likely to improve significantly during the morning hours.

When a two-hour delayed start is in effect, bus pickups and school start times will be delayed by two hours. Afternoon release times and afternoon bus routes would not change.

As with all weather related communications, Rockwall ISD will strive to make a decision and communicate to parents about a two-hour delayed start by 5:30 a.m. This information will be communicated through the rockwallisd.com website, an email to parents, text messages and Rockwall ISD social media accounts.

By adding this option, Rockwall ISD will enable students to lose as little instructional time as possible due to inclement weather. Days with a two-hour delayed start would not have to be made up later in the year.

Television and radio stations will also be notified about the delayed start, however they are the last group notified of a decision. We encourage parents to check rockwallisd.com to receive the latest information on any decision.
