Dobbs Elementary

Great things happening at Dobbs. The Lil Jackets’ KC Club has adopted 1st Battalion, 3rd Marines, Charlie Company and are collecting items to send to them. Students learned that the marines are in need of toiletries and snacks. After hearing that the soldiers had no games for their Rec Room, the students also began collecting gently used games. Mrs. Cruz sent the list out to our families and items have been flowing in. To raise money to mail the items, both first and second grades have sponsored coin voting on their latest projects. First grade created snowmen and snow-women and second grade created bottle characters after reading biographies of famous Americans. Dobbs also hosted our first Dads’ event with our partnership with Strong Fathers. Org. Dads got to visit students in the classrooms and then participated in activities with Mike Hall, founder and president of Strong Fathers. 190 dads participated! Our next Dads event, will be Dads and Kids Math morning on February 26th.

Jones

Jump Rope for Heart

Jones Elementary is finishing up Jump Rope for Heart this week. During this event, the students have been jumping rope, learning tricks, and have been engaged in fun cardiovascular activities. Our students have gone above and beyond in this community service project to raise money for research and education for the No. 1 and No. 4 killers, heart disease and stroke. So far, Jones Elementary students have raised almost $14,000! Students have been working hard to honor other students, family members, and friends that have been affected by conditions like these. The American Heart Association has told us that for every $25 raised, someone’s life is saved. We are so proud of our kids and their families for all of their hard work, passion, and for all of the lives they saved!

Multicultural and Art Night

Jones Elementary is a unified community of learners that embraces the various cultures represented in our school. Our Multicultural Night was designed to further foster the unique backgrounds and cultures of our students. On this night, our students will get the opportunity to experience and learn about the history of various children games from around the world. Each grade level will choose a continent and focus on a country to research a particular children’s game. On our Multicultural Night, students will receive a copy of all the games history, directions on how to play and a sample of the game. Furthermore, our students will also receive a passport stamped by the featured country as they tour the world.

Nebbie Elementary

Nebbie student, Abigail Corey, brought a life changing idea to the KC Club. A friend in need is battling leukemia, and for every 1,000 bottle caps collected, she will receive a chemo treatment. Our students have wrapped their arms around this project and have already collected hundreds of bottles caps. Nebbie’s KC Club is spreading the word community wide, and making every effort to make a difference in a special person’s life.

Pullen Elementary

February has been a busy month! The Pullen Power Robotics Team competed in the First Lego Robotics Competition Championships earlier this month. We are very proud of their hard work and dedication. Students collected 295 cans to donate to Helping Hands. Students had “Lunch With Dads” during the week before Valentine’s Day and were able to have their picture taken with their dad and also enjoy the Book Fair. Our traditional Kindness Grams were sold during this time to promote Kindness and Compassion. The State of Texas has declared February 15th as Nate Oxford Day. In Nate’s memory, the $450.49 raised from the Kindness Grams will be donated to benefit children attending Camp Mati, which will be called Camp Nate for one week this summer. On February 26th, our fourth graders will perform their music program and 5th and 6th graders will start to showcase their science projects. We will Kick-off Public School week a little early on February 27th with our first Pullen Showcase Night. Brittney Seymore, 3rd grade teacher, lead her students thought a Project Based Learning experience that helped support a family in need in our community, while also learning math, social studies, science and reading in a real world setting.

Thank you to anonymous community members who support our students in this opportunity for learning inside and outside of the school walls. Their driving question was “How can we help a family who has experienced a disaster?”

Linda Thomas, 6th grade teacher at Rochell, engaged her students in Project Based Learning by using the driving question “How can we identify opportunities for our community to change how it obtains and uses energy?” Students researched and discussed energy use and potential ways to save our planet’s resources., which led to inquiry with the students about why it is important to conserve energy at school. Students created Educreation, PicCollage, Story Board apps and Keynote presentations that were designed to persuade RISD to switch to their selected energy source. Students also designed informational posters with suggestions on how to reduce energy consumption on our campus using PicCollage and Digital scrapbooking apps.
