Rockwall ISD Leadership Academy graduated its first class on November 17. The new initiative was a success with 34 participants who attended the six-week program. Each program session highlighted different aspects of the school district. Participants learned the ‘nuts and bolts’ of operating a school district, accolades and accomplishments of students and staff and challenges facing Rockwall ISD. According to Mr. Christopher Smithey, a Reinhardt Elementary parent, “I thought it was great because the transparency was really good. The openness, as a parent you get to see what your kids do in that class but as part of the academy we were able to see the whole school district as a whole so it helps so we get information and we have a sense of belonging to the school district and it feels great to be able to selected by our principal because I know it was a select few.”
At the last meeting, members enjoyed dinner as they heard from Dr. Donna Fisher, Chief Technology Officer, about technology that supports 21st century learning. Members also enjoyed live technology demonstrations from students and teachers showcasing those 21st century learning skills. The night concluded with the ‘graduation’ of participants and a word of appreciation from Superintendent Jeff Bailey.
The district plans to continue the program next fall with another group of interested parents who will become even more active volunteers and vocal supporters of Rockwall ISD!
