National experts in math education traveled to Rockwall ISD this past week to provide a two day training for all 3-12 math teachers, several area math supervisors, and representatives from the Research in Math Education Department at SMU.  Dr. Karen Karp and Dr. Barbara Dougherty were the speakers for Rockwall Math Academy 2015.
Dr. Karp is a visiting professor of mathematics education at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, a past member of the NCTM Board of Directors, and a former president of the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators.  Her current scholarly work focuses on teaching math to students with disabilities.
Dr. Dougherty is a research professor and the past Richard Miller Endowed Chair for Mathematics Education at the University of Missouri.  She is a past member of the NCTM Board of Directors and is co-author of conceptual assessments for progress monitoring in algebra, intervention curriculum modules for middle school (with University of Texas-Austin), and an iPad applet (MOTO) for K-Grade 2 students to enhance number, measurement, geometry, and data concepts.
Their most recent publication entitled “13 Rules That Expire,” was selected as the article of the year by the NCTM editorial panel for Teaching Children Mathematics.
