The Rockwall High School Academic Decathlon team is heading to Hawaii to represent Texas at the National Decathlon Meet. Rockwall ISD celebrated the teams fifth state championship in a row and their trip to Hawaii this past week. The team will leave on Sunday for competition. We wish the Rockwall High AcDec team all the best on their upcoming journey!
Academic Decathlon, as the name implies, is a ten-event academic competition. A team is comprised of 9 students: 3 honors or A students, 3 scholastic or B students, and 3 varsity or C students. Each student competes in each of the following ten events: Speech, Interview, Essay, Math, Music, Economics, Science, Language & Literature, Art, and Social Science. A team’s total is calculated by adding the total scores of the top two honors, top two scholastic, and top two varsity students together.
The students meet everyday in class during school, and then work a tremendous number of hours independently each day at home. At the state competition, students compete not only for individual awards for each event, but also for scholarship money.
Rockwall High School’s team is comprised of Honors Students: Hope Wallace, Rebecca Voth, and Ryan Rock; Scholastic Students: Andrew Troxler, Evan Cedor, and Miguel Pacheco; and Varsity Students: Enrico Trevisani, Sarah Jester, and Grant Workings. The team is coached by Dr. Michelle Pauken and David Alvarado.
